Marc Cameron has just announced a new title in his Jericho Quinn series after eight years. The new book is titled Fail Safe. Due to be out early 2027.

The image Cameron shared gives us some clues about the book.

At the top of the image we can see the book Tinian and the Bomb: Project Alberta and Operation Centerboard. This book details the secret deployment of scientists, soldiers and sailors from Washington, D.C., the Los Alamos Laboratory (New Mexico), and Wendover Army Air Base (Utah) to North Field (Tinian) in the late spring of 1945 to assemble and to oversee the delivery of atomic bombs to Japan. This raises the possibility of the book involving some sort of nuclear threat dating back to World War II. This would fit with the title Fail Safe.

There are two charts visible, one showing Tinian, and the other labelled by hand “SAIPAN”. This would suggest the book will feature in that geographical area, at least in part. Jericho Quinn is known for his globetrotting exploits.

The mostly covered brown booklet is titled Historic Sites in the Tinian Military Lease Area.

North Field on the island of Tinian was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1984. The North Field NHL includes numerous resources associated with the history of North Field, including the invasion landing beaches, airfield runways and taxiways, Japanese military buildings and air apron, and atomic bomb loading pits, among others. In addition, numerous archaeological sites and military features in the vicinity have been identified as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. This booklet describes these resources through the eyes of those who have been there and features generous illustrations highlighting this unique and culturally important site. 

We can also see the loose manuscript in the image, with all but the title and heading “cast of characters” covered up. Atop the manuscript is a partially opened pocket knife with two pencils, forming what almost looks like a pair of dividers. It’s unclear if this was random or intentional by Cameron. If intentional, I suspect it’s just lending more to the overall geographical hint to where this book may be focused.

All in all, this looks very exciting. Given the break Cameron has had from the series, due to writing in the Ryanverse as well as his Arliss Cutter series, we could be looking at something incredibly fresh for the Jericho Quinn series. I really enjoyed Cameron’s Ryanverse prequel novel Red Winter because of the dive back into the past. If he does something similar here, going all the way back to World War II, then Fail Safe could be the best Jericho Quinn book so far.
