Jack Ryan portrait

Physical Description & Personality

Appearance: Standing 6’1″ with a solid, athletic build that has weathered the decades. He has blue eyes and fair skin reflecting his Irish heritage. Originally sandy coloured hair, but now salt and pepper, with more salt than pepper. While usually seen in well-tailored, conservative suits as a statesman, he is most comfortable in casual outdoor gear. He famously suffers from chronic back pain—a lasting reminder of a helicopter crash during his Marine Corps service.

Personality Traits: Ryan is defined by a rigid Eagle Scout moral compass that often puts him at odds with the shades of gray world of espionage and politics. He is a reluctant leader, frequently claiming he never wanted the power he wields. He possesses a brilliant, intuitive analytical mind capable of seeing patterns in disparate data points. While generally composed, he has a legendary Irish temper, particularly when confronted with bureaucratic incompetence or moral cowardice.

Background and Education

Early Life: Born in Baltimore, Maryland. Attended Loyola High School, a prestigious Jesuit preparatory school in Towson, Maryland.

The “Jesuit” Mindset: This is the most critical part of his early bio. The Jesuits are famous for teaching students how to think rather than what to think. Their philosophy of “Cura Personalis” (care for the whole person) and being a “Man for Others” became the backbone of Jack’s later career in public service.

Academic Focus: Even as a teenager, Ryan showed a high aptitude for history and economics. He wasn’t just a bookworm, though; he grew up with the street-smart sensibilities of a cop’s son, allowing him to navigate both elite academic circles and blue-collar environments with ease.

Discipline: The school’s rigid structure complemented the discipline he received at home from his father, preparing him for the demands of the NROTC program and his brief but impactful stint in the Marines.

Parents: His father, Emmet William Ryan, was a decorated Baltimore Police Department homicide detective and WWII veteran who instilled in Jack a deep respect for the law and public service. His mother, Catherine Burke Ryan, was dedicated nurse. She provided the compassionate counterbalance to Emmet’s hardened detective persona, contributing to Jack’s deep-seated value for human life. Both his parents were killed in a plane crash at O’Hare International Airport nineteen months after he was involved in a helicopter crash.

Academic Credentials

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): Ryan graduated from Boston College with a degree in Economics and a strong minor in history.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): After leaving his career as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch, he enrolled at Georgetown University. He completed his doctorate in History, which led to his role as a civilian professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, paving his way into the intelligence community.
  • Professional Certification: While waiting for his Marine Corps duty station assignment early in his career, he passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.

Military Service: After graduating from Boston College, he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. His active military career was cut short when his platoon’s helicopter crashed over Crete. Ryan saved several of his men despite sustaining a severe spinal injury that required a long recovery and led to his medical discharge.

Published Books

  • Options and Decisions: about the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  It dealt with the nature of tactical decisions made under combat conditions.
  • Doomed Eagles: a historical analysis of naval history. Although it received some praise for the quality of its analysis, critics noted it was more of an academic textbook than a popular read.
  • Fighting Sailor: This is an authorized biography of Fleet Admiral William Frederick Halsey, Jr.. Ryan worked on this book for several years, starting during his time as a history instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy and continuing while serving as a CIA liaison in London.

Operational History

Promotions and Rank History: Ryan’s trajectory is unprecedented:

  • 2nd Lieutenant (USMC)
  • CIA Analyst
  • Deputy Director of Intelligence (DDI)
  • Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (DDCI)
  • National Security Advisor
  • Vice President
  • President of the United States

Early Operations:

  • The ULA Crisis (Patriot Games, 1981–1982):
    • While on a research trip in London, Ryan intervened in a kidnapping attempt on the Prince and Princess of Wales by the Ulster Liberation Army (ULA).
    • Despite being shot during the encounter, he successfully thwarted the terrorists and was later named an honorary Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
    • This event forced Ryan out of academia and into a permanent role as a CIA analyst after the ULA targeted his family in Maryland.
  • The “Rabbit” Defection (Red Rabbit, 1982):
    • Serving as a CIA liaison to MI6 in London, Ryan was tasked with the extraction of a KGB communications officer, Oleg Zaitzev (codenamed “Rabbit”).
    • Zaitzev provided intelligence regarding a KGB-backed plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II.
    • Ryan helped the Zaitzev family defect
    • Ryan personally saved the Pope’s life. Ryan physically tackled the assassin (Mehemet Ali Agca) in St. Peter’s Square just as he fires, which spoils the assassin’s aim and prevents a fatal hit.
  • The Red October Incident (The Hunt for Red October, 1984):
    • Ryan identified that Soviet Captain Marko Ramius was not planning a rogue nuclear strike, but was instead attempting to defect with the USSR’s most advanced silent submarine.
    • Ryan personally boarded the vessel, helped navigate it to U.S. waters, and assisted in the fake destruction of the sub to deceive the Soviet Navy.
  • The East Berlin Assignment (Red Winter, 1985):
    • Following the Red October success, Ryan was sent behind the Iron Curtain to investigate a high-ranking Stasi official (codenamed CALISTO) who wished to defect with radar technology secrets.
    • During the mission, Ryan encountered a KGB assassin and worked alongside a young Mary Pat Foley to secure the defector and recover sensitive F-117 stealth aircraft wreckage that had been stolen by East German agents.
  • The Covert War in Colombia (Clear and Present Danger, approx. 1988–1990):
    • Appointed Acting Deputy Director (Intelligence) due to the terminal illness of his mentor, Admiral James Greer.
    • Discovered Operation SHOWBOAT, an illegal, off-the-books covert war against drug cartels that intentionally bypassed Congressional oversight and his own department.
    • After the administration abandoned U.S. light infantry troops in the Colombian jungle, Ryan personally joined a high-risk rescue mission to extract the survivors.
    • Witnessed the death of Sergeant Buck Zimmer during the extraction and personally vowed to fund the college education of Zimmer’s seven children—a promise he kept throughout his career.
    • Famously refused a direct request from the President of the United States to lie to Congress about the operation, stating, “I will not lie for you”.
  • The Vatican Treaty (The Sum of All Fears, approx. 1991):
    • Ryan conceived a radical solution to the seemingly “unsolvable” Israeli-Palestinian conflict to prevent a regional nuclear escalation.
    • He proposed turning Jerusalem into a sovereign, international city-state administered by a commission of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity).
    • The plan utilized the Swiss Guards as a neutral, non-aligned security force to guarantee access to holy sites for all parties.
    • The treaty was a massive diplomatic success that earned Ryan worldwide acclaim and led to his nomination as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (DDCI).

The First Presidency (The “Accidental” Term, Approx. 1996 – January 1997)

Ryan served less than half of Roger Durling’s remaining term (only about nine months), so this time did not count against his two-term limit under the 22nd Amendment.

  • The Conflict of Succession (Debt of Honor / Executive Orders, approx. 1995–1996):
    • The Placeholder VP: After Vice President Ed Kealty resigned in disgrace due to a sexual assault scandal, President Roger Durling appointed Ryan as Vice President solely because of his integrity and lack of political ambition.
    • The Capitol Attack: Minutes after Ryan was sworn in as VP, a disgruntled Japanese airline pilot crashed a Boeing 747 into the U.S. Capitol during a Joint Session of Congress.
    • The Total Loss: The attack killed President Durling, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and almost the entire legislative branch.
    • Ascension to Presidency: As the sole surviving constitutional officer, Ryan was sworn in as President in the dark, chaotic aftermath of the strike.
    • Key Challenges: Ryan had to rebuild the entire federal government from scratch while simultaneously fighting a biological Ebola attack and a legal challenge from Ed Kealty, who claimed Ryan’s appointment as VP was never finalized.
  • The UIR War (Executive Orders): He led the U.S. and its allies (Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) in a conventional war against the United Islamic Republic (UIR), which had formed after Iran annexed Iraq.
  • The Ryan Doctrine: Following the UIR conflict, he established a new foreign policy stating that the U.S. would hold foreign leaders personally and physically accountable for state-sponsored attacks on American citizens.

The First Elected Presidency (Approx. January 1997 – January 2001 or 2002/2003)

  • The Russo-Chinese War (The Bear and the Dragon): Ryan formally recognized Taiwan and brokered a historic alliance with Russia to defend Siberia against a massive Chinese invasion driven by economic desperation.
  • Founding of The Campus (The Teeth of the Tiger): Just before leaving office, Ryan signed a final, highly classified executive order creating “The Campus”, a private off-the-books intelligence and operations organization designed to bypass bureaucratic hurdles. This was the brainchild of Senator Gerry Hendley.
  • Legal Immunity: He ensured the legal protection of Campus operatives by signing one hundred blank presidential pardons before leaving office.

Political Retirement (Approx. 2001/2003 – 2008)

  • Writing Memoirs (The Teeth of the Tiger): Ryan spent much of his retirement writing his autobiography: however, it went quicker than he’d expected, so much so that he’d also written a confidential annex to his autobiography that would not see the light of day until twenty years after his death. It’s unclear whether or not a version was published without the annex.
  • The Lecture Circuit (Dead or Alive): He became a sought-after speaker, earning substantial fees to lecture on history and his time in the White House at institutions like Georgetown University.
  • Advocacy for John Clark (Dead or Alive): Ryan personally investigated the service record of John Clark and successfully arranged for him to be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Vietnam.
  • Return to Politics (Dead or Alive): After becoming increasingly disgusted by the corruption and policy failures of the Edward Kealty administration, Ryan was persuaded by Arnie van Damm to announce his candidacy for the presidency as an Independent candidate.

The Second Elected Presidency (Approx. January 2009 – Present)

  • The Return to Power (Locked On / Threat Vector): After several years in retirement, Ryan successfully ran for president as a third-party candidate, defeating the corrupt Ed Kealty.
  • The South China Sea Crisis: He navigated a multi-front conflict with a belligerent Chinese military leadership involving large-scale cyber warfare (conducted by the Ghost Ship group) and territorial disputes over Taiwan.
  • The Second Ukrainian Conflict (Command Authority): Ryan faced off against Russian President Valeri Volodin (a former KGB official). He deployed U.S. forces to Ukraine to halt a Russian advance on Kyiv, utilizing information about Volodin’s secret past as leverage.
  • The North Korean Nuclear Crisis (Full Force and Effect): Ryan managed a high-stakes standoff with the North Korean regime over its illicit nuclear program and a specific plot targeting the U.S. president personally.
  • The European NATO Defense (Commander in Chief): Ryan countered a Russian plot to destabilize NATO by massing 5,000 troops on the borders of a NATO member state, again preventing a full-scale European war through a mix of military posturing and covert action.
  • The OPM Security Breach (True Faith and Allegiance): Ryan managed the fallout of a massive cyber-theft involving over 25 million security clearance (SF-86) records.
    • This identity intelligence was used by terrorists to target and assassinate undercover U.S. personnel.
    • Ryan established a policy of holding the sponsors of these digital targeting packages physically accountable, ultimately authorizing the use of his own son as bait to draw out the perpetrators.
  • The Chinese Coup Plot (Power and Empire): Ryan outmaneuvered a secret cabal within the Chinese government as they attempted to orchestrate a coup.
    • He avoided a coordinated assassination attempt during the G20 Summit in Tokyo, using intelligence provided by The Campus to identify compromised security details.
  • The Persian Spring and Nuclear Theft (Oath of Office): While domestic flu and flooding ravaged the U.S., Ryan handled the Persian Spring uprising in Iran.
    • He oversaw the recovery of two hijacked Russian nuclear missiles that threatened global stability during the Iranian unrest.
  • The Indonesian Diplomatic Crisis (Code of Honor): Ryan entered a standoff with the Indonesian government to secure the release of an old friend, Father Pat West, who had been falsely accused of blasphemy and arrested.
    • He managed this as a delicate diplomatic maneuver, using back-channels to avoid a permanent rift with a critical Southeast Asian ally.
  • The First Lady Kidnapping (Chain of Command): Ryan faced a direct personal assault when a billionaire mastermind orchestrated the kidnapping of Dr. Cathy Ryan to force a change in U.S. pharmaceutical policy.
    • Refusing to negotiate with the perpetrators, Ryan oversaw the tactical recovery of the First Lady and subsequently used his executive power to dismantle the global criminal enterprise behind the plot.
  • The Camarilla and Panama Crisis (Command and Control): Ryan handled a global threat from a shadowy organization known as the Camarilla, which sought to influence world markets through violence.
    • He personally traveled to Panama to shore up an alliance with President Botero, despite the high physical risk and several bullet holes in his own clothing by the trip’s end.
  • The Belgorod Crisis (Act of Defiance): In a mirror of his early career, Ryan dealt with the threat of the Belgorod, a state-of-the-art Russian submarine with capabilities that could disrupt the global underwater acoustic network.
    • He successfully prevented a nuclear escalation by deploying his daughter, Katie, as a strategic intelligence liaison on the front lines.
  • The Taiwan Strait Blockade (Defense Protocol): Ryan confronted a massive Chinese naval blockade of Taiwan, authorizing U.S. ships to run the blockade and signal America’s commitment to its allies.
    • He addressed the nation as part of a global coalition, asserting a united front against “aggressive bullies” in the international community.
  • The Angolan Coup (Executive Power): Ryan’s youngest son, Kyle Ryan, was taken hostage during a bloody military coup in Angola while serving as a technician for the DIA.
    • Forced into the ultimate leadership dilemma, Ryan refused to compromise U.S. principles or negotiate with the coup leaders, instead authorizing a high-risk rescue operation that leveraged both MARSOC and Katie’s intelligence analysis.

Relationships & Allegiances

Family: Married to Dr. Caroline “Cathy” Ryan, a world-class ophthalmic surgeon at Johns Hopkins. They have four children: Sally, Jack Jr. (who follows in his father’s footsteps at The Campus), Katie, and Kyle.

Mentors:

  • Admiral James Greer (deceased). Deputy Director (Intelligence), CIA. Ryan’s primary mentor and surrogate father figure. Greer recruited Ryan and provided the philosophical and professional guidance that shaped his career.
  • Emmet William Ryan (deceased). Baltimore Police Detective (Homicide). Jack’s biological father, who instilled in him a deep respect for the law and the principle of doing what is right.

Key Allies:

  • Mary Pat Foley: Director of National Intelligence (DNI); formerly CIA Director and Ops Officer. A long-time operational partner whose history with Ryan is drenched in blood. They first worked together during the Cold War in Moscow and Berlin. She is one of his most trusted advisors on high-level intelligence matters.
  • Arnold “Arnie” van Damm: White House Chief of Staff. Ryan’s fiercely loyal, if cynical, political stage manager. Arnie taught Ryan how to navigate the presidency and protects him from political overreach.
  • Scott Adler: Secretary of State. A brilliant career diplomat and one of Ryan’s closest intellectual peers. Adler has been the primary architect of Ryan’s foreign policy successes, from the Vatican Treaty to the Russo-Chinese War.
  • Dan Murray: Attorney General; formerly FBI Director and Legal Attaché (London). A trusted friend since Ryan’s early days in London. Murray is Ryan’s primary link to domestic law enforcement and has been instrumental in multiple counter-terrorism investigations.
  • John Clark (John Kelly): Director of Operations, The Campus; formerly Navy SEAL and CIA Ops Officer. Ryan’s primary stick when diplomacy fails. Their relationship was cemented during a mission in Colombia. Clark represents the dark side of the Ryanverse, performing the off-the-books tasks Ryan authorizes.
  • Domingo “Ding” Chavez: Senior Operations Officer, The Campus. Clark’s son-in-law and the most effective field operative in Ryan’s arsenal. Ryan views him as a highly educated and professional officer who has served his country whenever needed.
  • Gerry Hendley: Director of The Campus and Hendley Associates. A former U.S. Senator and one of Ryan’s closest personal friends. Ryan persuaded Hendley to set up The Campus to bypass standard government oversight.

Rivals and Adversaries:

  • Sean Miller (ULA Terrorist – deceased). Ryan thwarted Miller’s attempt to assassinate the Royal Family in London. Miller then launched a personal vendetta against Ryan, targeting his pregnant wife and young daughter in Maryland, which forced Ryan to rejoin the CIA to hunt him down. Executed by the State of Maryland.
  • Sergey Golovko: Originally Cold War rivals, Golovko was the primary strategist for Soviet intelligence. Their rivalry was based on professional duty rather than personal malice, eventually evolving into a wary, respectful alliance where they shared intelligence to prevent global catastrophes. No longer in active command of Russian intelligence.
  • Ed Kealty: A political rival who challenged Ryan’s legitimacy to the Presidency.
  • Valeri Volodin (now former President of Russia). A former KGB officer and hardliner, Volodin represented the Old Guard of Russian aggression that Ryan has fought since the Cold War. He sought to destabilize NATO and reclaim Soviet-era influence, specifically by invading Ukraine, which forced Ryan into a direct military and intelligence standoff.
  • President Li (President of China). Unlike his predecessors who used blunt military threats, Li utilizes economic policies and advanced technology as weapons of war. Ryan views him as a sophisticated expansionist whose long-term goals for Chinese dominance directly threaten global stability and American interests.
  • Mahmoud Haji Daryaei (Supreme Leader of the UIR – deceased). Daryaei orchestrated a biological terror attack using a weaponized strain of Ebola against the United States. Most personally, he dispatched an assassin to target Ryan’s youngest daughter, Katie, which led Ryan to formally establish the Ryan Doctrine and authorize Daryaei’s assassination by a precision laser-guided bomb strike.
  • Uda bin Sali (Terrorist Financier – deceased). Identified as a critical financier for global terrorism. Ryan viewed him as a legitimate target whose elimination was necessary to prevent further funding of anti-Western attacks. Eliminated by Campus operatives.
  • Nikita Yermilov (President of Russia): a more pragmatic rival to Jack Ryan Sr., representing the post-Volodin era of Russian leadership. While he maintains a veneer of diplomatic cooperation, he remains a strategic adversary whose interests often clash with American policy.
